The first month of the new year is about to end and I find myself still reflecting on my goals and aspirations for 2025. If you’re like me, you may have experienced the all-too-familiar pattern of setting New Year's resolutions with high hopes, only to watch them fade away by March. I am trying hard to make 2025 the exception. If you've read my other post, 10 Lists to Make for the New Year, you'll know that this year I'm trying to approach my goals differently. I’ve also decided more recently to implement the principles from The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington.

What is The 12 Week Year?

The 12 Week Year is a book that challenges the traditional concept of setting goals for an entire year. It focuses instead on the idea of condensing a year’s worth of goals into just 12 weeks. The idea is that by shortening the time frame, we create a sense of urgency and focus that allows us to achieve more in less time.

Does it work?

There’s a psychological benefit to setting shorter timeframes for goals. With a full year ahead, it’s easy to feel like there’s always more time to work on things, leading to delays and distractions. But with only 12 weeks to achieve your goal, there’s a natural urgency that kicks in. Every day matters and it becomes easier to focus on what truly needs to be done.

Key Concepts from The 12 Week Year
  1. Vision and Planning: The book encourages creating a compelling vision for your life and aligning your 12-week goals with that vision. This gives you the “why” behind everything you’re doing. From there, you create a tactical plan to break down your vision into actionable steps.

  2. Measurement and Accountability: Tracking your progress is essential. The book emphasizes creating weekly and daily plans to ensure you’re consistently moving forward. Having accountability (whether through a coach, partner or even a personal journal) is also a huge part of staying on track.

  3. Execution: The key to success is consistent, focused execution. The authors discuss how to develop strong habits, eliminate distractions and make your daily actions align with your larger goals.

  4. Time Blocking: Instead of letting your schedule dictate your productivity, the book advocates for “time blocking”—purposefully setting aside time in your day to focus on your most important tasks.

How I’ll Be Implementing The 12 Week Year in 2025

After reading The 12 Week Year, I’m feeling more motivated and ready to tackle my goals in a strategic way. Here’s how I plan to put the concepts into action:

  1. Clarifying My Vision: The first step for me is to create a vision of what I want to achieve in the long term. Once that’s clear, I’ll narrow it down to the top three goals I want to focus on for the next 12 weeks.

  2. Setting SMART Goals: Instead of vague resolutions like “get healthier” or “read more,” I’ll set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. For example, instead of saying “exercise more,” my goal will be to work out for 30 minutes, 4 times a week.

  3. Time Blocking My Weeks: I’ll dedicate specific hours each day to my goals. This means scheduling time to work on them just as I would for meetings or important events. By creating a non-negotiable time to work on my goals, I’ll avoid procrastination and ensure consistent progress.

  4. Tracking Progress: I’ll be using a simple weekly review system to check my progress and hold myself accountable. At the end of each week, I’ll assess what I’ve accomplished and adjust my strategy for the next week if needed. This way, I can ensure that I’m always on track to hit my goals.

  5. Celebrating Wins: One thing I love about The 12 Week Year is that it encourages celebrating wins—big and small. At the end of each 12-week period, I’ll take time to reflect on what I’ve achieved, and then I’ll plan for the next 12 weeks.

Final Thoughts

By implementing The 12 Week Year into my 2025 routine, I’m hoping to stay focused, productive, and intentional with my time. Shortening the time frame for my goals will give me the urgency I need to stay motivated and consistently progress. I’m excited to see where this method takes me, and I encourage anyone who’s feeling overwhelmed by the idea of a year-long goal to give this system a try.

Here’s to making this year a success—one 12-week block at a time.
